• hair spray •

“They say, ‘Don’t use hair spray,
it’s bad for the ozone.’
So I’m sitting in this
concealed (sic) apartment,
this concealed (sic) unit…
It’s sealed, it’s beautiful.
I don’t think anything gets out.
And I’m not supposed to be
using hair spray?”
Is it true, can it be?
That this,
coiffed kumquat,
this preening peacock,
this ham-handed,
hairdooed harlequin,
has, somehow,
been put in charge,
of the
… Presidency? Please.
Somebody ‘wake me.

• here in me •

Like a mantra,
it runs through my mind,
‘Polk. Jackson. Reagan. Bush.
Pomp and brutality.’
Which is no help at all.
And then, a voice of reason,
which said, “Not in my house,”
and I thought that was quite right.
“Exactly,” I said, reverentially.
“It doesn’t have to be that way,
not here, in me.”

Humans are clumsy beasts.
They say they won’t step on you.
They’ll even make a big fuss about it,
when you get up (just in case),
to move out of their way, with,
“Hey, I wasn’t gonna step on ya,
little fella, wha’d ya think,
I was gonna step on ya?
I wouldn’t do that, not to you.”
They say they won’t step on you,
and, more often than not,
they don’t even mean to,
but then,
every once in a blue moon,
out of the blue, they do.

The girl wants to go to Israel, to “do service,” over the Spring Break. “No,” is not really an option, to my way of thinking.
I left home at seventeen, and worked on boats in the Gulf of Mexico – best and worst (experiences) of my life – wouldn’t trade it for anything.
“Tell her it’s her decision,” I say. “As long as she accepts personal responsibility.”
‘Girls’ like her have saved the lives of soldiers in North Africa, in WWII (I’ve met them); indeed, women have served with distinction throughout our history. Now, some fly sorties over hostile territory. Some will be Presidents, one day. Wouldn’t put it past her. (Sigh.) My little girl. “Yes,” is what I say.
